The past 3 weeks' cid2 lessons :3

In the CID lessons in the past 3 weeks, I've enjoyed them alot. There were discussions and groupworks and every lesson was very engaging.

In one of the lessons, it was about poverty. The teacher showed us 2 pictures. One of them depicts a homeless man who was seeking for help so that he could call his family as his house was broken into and all his things were stolen, and the other picture depicts a woman carrying a baby and begging a man who seemed like a tourist for money. She then let us choose who we would help if we only had a one-dollar coin.

After we had chosen who we would like to help, the teacher showed us the story of the two people. The man actually has only 1 arm and was begging for someone to help him get on his feet again after his house has been broken into, and the woman was begging under a syndicate who makes woman carry babies and go on the street to beg money for them and they would only get a little of what they've earnt.

We were then given the choice to change our answers. I thought that I should help the woman as I should donate the money to her as she will still get a little of what I've donated and she could still survive, and I thought the man could manage by himself. But, I was wrong. I did not think of the long-term consequences if I donated to the woman. The woman would suffer more if I had donated to her as her 'boss' would think that she can help them earn a lot of money as compared to the others and they would definately want her to stay and help them earn more money, instead of thinking that she was not capable of earning money for them and set her free.

In this lesson, I learnt that we should always think ahead and not only thinking about what is happening on the surface. When we are trying to help someone, we might be actually making things worse for them. Sometimes it is the best not to do anything though...
